Well 3 yarn weights in 4 sizes (plus instructions to make X large) is like buying 3 different patterns.

With so many options designed for the beginning in mind, as you become more skilled you can try out all the different options available. Add a cable, change the leg shape, use a more complex leg cuff. Omit the short rows if you want as well. Omit half the short rows for over disposables or a toilet trained little one.
